Most likely, these portraits were
commisioned by the sorcerers as tokens of
power over their thrall. Having these images within their possession no
doubt gave the sorcerers great control over their unruly servants. Very
possibly, as well, they were used to identify their servants, and as means
to assert ownership over them - especially useful, as very few demons were
granted names, and all of them were quite illiterate.
