How it was that so many of these ceremonial knives survived the eruption of the volcano Urkh! Mons, is suggested by the enchantress, the Lady Grynwalt in her `Memoirs’.  The enchantress was an eyewitness to the eruption, and the consequent destruction of Kh!’rk Q’m, the capitol of Nergal.

“It fills me with horror to reflect upon the memories of that dreadful night,” the Lady Grynwalt writes.  “I’d sooner not think of it, nor speak of it at all, but instead would rather lock all these horrid recollections deep into the vault of forgetfulness.  However, inasmuch as these events have transpired to affect so profound a change upon our world, and as it is the case that there are so few of us who did, indeed observe of our own eyes what did unfold that terrible night, I feel it hard upon me, a responsibility to bear witness of these events, that others, our scholars, may study upon these words and understand for themselves how the world they were born into came to be as it is…”

“… Oh!  The things that crowded all upon us, as they all fled the eruption that quaked the ground beneath us, all in mad panic.  I never dreamed such horrors could be – demons and dwayyos, goblins and ghouls, ogres and trolls, and many more which I could not name.  They all came bounding, crowding out of the holes in which they had dwelt in darkness, as columns of steam erupted at their very feet…

“We had a horrid time of it, my dear friends fighting hard to make their way through these maddened hordes, the magician and the wolves who followed him, and his friend, Ham, cutting through the crowded things in front…  Suzette was by my side, and she made good work of the knife the magician had given her as a presentation the months before… The wizards Toma, and the stalwart Rutuger, followed up from behind, ensuring that no evil thing could ambush us as we made our own way out of that terrible city…

“The demons cut at us with talon, tooth and claw, nor do I know how we made it out of that dread place…

“I saw legions of these dark creatures pick up from the quaking ground elaborate knives that had fallen from the temples, and lay in the broken streets, knives that the evil priests did use in their evil ceremonies.  The demons now used these knives each against the other, as weapons in their flight, cutting their way through the hordes of ogres and goblins as we ourselves were doing.  And I observed that many of the demons that had wings and could fly, did fly away from the erupting volcano, through thick clouds of smoke and ash, carrying with them in their talons these horrible knives, some of them most elaborate…”
